Castor is French for beaver

Castor is Brian Richer (a trained architectural stone carver with a background in English literature) and Kei Ng (a trained architect with a background in set design). They are interested in the middle ground between art and design. Castor design lighting and furniture with a sense of irreverence that define an interior. Materials and their reuse make up an important part of Castor’s aesthetic; burnt out bulbs to make lighting, a rusty shipping container to make a sauna. This re-contextualization of materials is a primary design consideration.

Established in 2006, Castor Design has worked on numerous interiors projects, custom lighting and furniture design, public art commissions, and launched a range of products found throughout North America, Europe, Japan and Hong Kong. The firm’s work has been featured in magazines like Wallpaper, Dwell, I.D., EnRoute, Interior Design, House and Home, and Toronto Life, as well as blogs for DesignBoom, FastCo, Dentk, Apartment Therapy, and more.

Their experience in restaurants and love of food and music inspired them to open Parts & Labour, a space that combines a fine dining room with a punk rock basement venue, and its offshoot, P&L Burger.
