Castor is French for Beaver

Castor Design was established in 2009 in Toronto, and expanded in 2020 to include a product-focused studio in Detroit. Through thoughtful experimentation with process and technique, Castor’s products have garnered international recognition for highly conceptual, essentialist design and an inventive use of familiar materials. Subtle humor, design history, and narrative storytelling are at the heart of their practice, culminating in products that provide an understated and elegant human connection.

Castor has been featured in exhibitions and fairs; created experiential installations; and had their award-winning products featured in hotels, retail environments, restaurants/bars, and in corporate and residential spaces around the world. Castor has also conceived and produced a number of exciting custom projects, including lighting, furniture and interior spaces, and unique public art commissions. They also designed, owned and operated Oddfellows and Parts and Labour restaurants- two establishments that influenced the culinary landscape in Toronto.

The studio has also built an impressive body of client work for brands such as Seth Rogen’s Houseplant, Matheson (in partnership with chef Matty Matheson), Tokyo Smoke, EQ3 and Umbra. Castor has won a number of prestigious awards for their standout work, including those from the Architizer A+ Awards, A’ Design, Azure Magazine’s AZ Awards, Interior Design Magazine, and numerous international design fairs.

Whether a one-off or limited edition design for a startup, or a product for established companies pursuing mass production, we offer clients innovative thinking and production expertise every step of the way.

Our clients include Seth Rogen/Houseplant, Tokyo Smoke, EQ3, Opening Soon, Umbra, and Matty Matheson/Matheson Cookware among others.
